Autism is a neurobiological disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate, reason and interact socially with other individuals. Autism is considered a spectrum disorder because it affects individuals in varying degrees of severity. 100% of individuals with autism have problems with sensory integration, socialization and communication.
How Common is Autism?
The incidence of autism is growing dramatically. One out of every 68 kids have developed some form of autism.
Autism is far more common in boys than girls (1 out of every 42 are boys) and is found in all walks of life and everywhere around the world.
What is the cause of autism?
Although the cause remains unknown, researchers believe it is linked to genetics with a number of possible triggers, both external and environmental. Autism is not a result of bad parenting. Children with autism are not spoiled kids who choose to misbehave.
